So last week DC announced that later this year there’s going to be some rather big changes to their comic line-up . If you haven’t already heard (why not I ask?) then the New 52 is coming to an end. Yes the big Universe reboot seems to have run it’s natural course well to a degree.

Like Marvel it seems that DC are looking to diversify their range of titles currently on offer. Yet this Universe isn’t actually being ripped apart and forgotten about – it’s a soft reboot. Not like the beginning of the New 52.

Incoming

Convergence The upcoming storyline Convergence is where this will all begin, with the new titles beginning to appear this June. There will be 25 titles that will remain complete with the normal numbering. Then there will be 24 new series all beginning with a new #1. According to DC this new beginning will allow them to focus on diversity. With a title to suit everyone.

Looking through the list of titles I’m intrigued. Constantine is getting replaced with Constantine: The Hellblazer. A direct nod back to his Vertigo days. One can only hope that it’s a step in the right direction – Constantine seemed to lose his usual charm in the New 52 along with his wit making him a less engaging character, for little old me.

DC are looking to satisfy everyone and their dog. “This heralds in a new era for the DC Universe which will allow us to publish something for everyone, be more expansive and modern in our approach and tell stories that better reflect the society around us,” DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Dan DiDio stated in the press release. “Whether you’ve been a DC fan your whole life, or whether you are new to comics — there will be a book for you beginning in June.”

Cool, but…

harley-quinn-and Power Girl It looks like exciting times lay ahead for DC yet looking through there list of new and continuing books – there seems to be something missing! Something that has made me a little less excited and a little more perplexed.

Don’t get me wrong I’m all for a little more diversity in comics. Some of the new titles sound pretty cool. Harley Quinn & Power Girl for instance sounds like an insane ride. Teaming these two up once more will create for some great stories. Seeing how they work together and what adventures lay in store is going to be one hell of a ride.

However I’m going through the list and there’s no Super Girl! Yep the cousin of Superman is nowhere to be seen. Now that seems to be a missed opportunity – if you’ve been reading the series to date, you may have found like me, it’s been one of the stronger 52 titles. It’s been rather great seeing the character develop and I’ll miss her.

I’m sure that now the new TV series is being developed this wont be the last we see of her. Yet I’m feeling sad knowing that this series will end soon and instead of seeing the character grow even more – we will undoubtedly get another reboot.

Now for my next little concern – one that I’m sure some of you will be shocked by. I’m a big Batman fan. I’m pretty sure you all know that. Yet part of me feels like DC may be relying on the Bat a little too much. Eight of the titles are based around the “Bat family”.

I know they sell well, and any DC universe needs Batman, plus to be fair there’s probably that amount of Bat titles now on-going as it is. Yet I feel that there was room to be more bold and perhaps give some of those series over to other characters. I know they want to attract a wider audience, different age demographics and so for that they need some lighter titles.

Bat-Mite_001 However Bat-Mite! Really a solo series for this bizarre character. Nope sorry personally I would have preferred a Shazam title. Shazam has always been a lighter character who has always been able to bring some comedy relief to the table.

I was also hoping that perhaps one of my favourite characters would get their own solo series – Zatanna! A wonderful character who can wield magic. I haven’t really seen her about that much in the last few years. To be fair that may be just me missing something – if I have let me know. Yet part of me was hoping to see some new adventures for her.

Don’t get me wrong there’s some really intriguing titles here and I have high hopes for them. I guess they will never be able to please everyone – maybe one day though…..one can still dream…after all.
