Even though I do my best to keep up to date with the latest comics – it can sometimes prove to be a struggle. There’s so much going in from all of the major publishers, that it can be a minefield as to what to read next.

Narrowing my choices of my must read to just three has proved rather problematic – in fact with so much in the horizon it’s proven to be a rather big nightmare! However I’ve managed to do just this so here’s the three I feel, you should definitely get stuck into. Three that could prove to be the best reads this year – of course it does mean I could also be rather harshly disappointed!

Secret Wars by Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic

WhenEverythingEnds Secret Wars grabbed my attention, when Marvel began teasing it last year. Not sure what to expect – the revelation of the Battle World and the two Marvel Universes heading towards a fight to the bitter end! What more could I ask for.

It had me intrigued and excited, yet the biggest question was whether or not to include it on this very list. I knew it was going to be a big part of the Marvel universe – yet till this very week even I couldn’t imagine just how big.

It was this weeks announcement, which pushed this story arc onto this list. The Marvel universe will never be the same again as its ripped apart and reformed into something totally new! Now how can any of us resist not reading this new beginning.

The Sculptor by Scott McCloud

the Sculptor It’s been a long time since we’ve seen any new work from Scott McCloud. Yet this February we will finally get to see his long awaited graphic novel The Sculptor. Clocking in at five hundred pages, The Sculptor focuses on a young sculptor who makes a deals with Death.

Granted the ability to sculpt anything he can imagine, with a heavy price tag attached. For he only has two hundred days of life to use this incredible gift. Things are set to get even more complicated when he finally meets the love of his life.

This sounds like an epic story, I love the idea behind it and it will be interesting to see how the main character deals with love and this pact made with Death.

The Darkseid War by  Geoff Johns, David Finch and Richard Friend

The Darkseid war I couldn’t really not include, what could be this years biggest grudge fight – The JLA vs Darkseid. Not much is known about this story arc, yet it could be one if DC’s biggest of the year!

It also will mark the culmination of Geoff Johns work since the beginning of the New 52. It could also mean the addition of a few new members to the JLA including Mister Miracle.

It’s going to be a big fight and I can’t wait to see it unfold later this year. Plus there’s the hunt that Darkseid is only part of the equation!

So there you have my three picks for this year. Keep an eye out for these in a year full of exciting happenings in the comic world.
